Wallhof - Moves 4,5 and end-game....

Move 4

On the Polish left flank, the cossacks attack the Swedish musketeers on the edge of the woods, while the cavalry melee continues - the Swedes have committed a fresh cavalry regiment attacking the Poles in the flank
in the centre the Swedish infantry stand firm, although coming of worst in exchange of vollies with the Polish german infantry and fire from light cannon
On the Polish right flank the cavalry melee continues - the Swedes have committed a fresh cavalry regiment attacking the Poles in the flank here as well.
 Move 5

The cavalry melees on both flank are lost by the Poles, outnumbered and attacked in the flank, they rout with the cossacks and others trying to hold off the pursuing Swedish cavalry. The Polish german infantry in the centre now find themselves outmatched by the Swedish infantry.

A victory for the Swedish army

---oXo---

Notes:
1. Game Approximate overall casualties (end move 5),
  • Swedish :  Total: 660; comprising Cavalry - 330 (11 figs), Infantry - 330 (11 figures)
  • Polish:   Total: 1320;  comprising Hussars/Pancerni Cavalry - 1050 (35 figs),  Reiters - 60 (2 figs), Cossack Cavalry - 90 (3 figures), German Infantry - 120 (4 figs)
  • As next move would be off the table - game ended. Although the Poles would have lost more men as they were pursued.
2. The Historical result was a Swedish Victory, with few casualties on their side and at least a 1000+ on the Polish side.

Wallhof - Move 3

I am slowly getting through this game, a move every day or so. Would get through it quicker but I just enjoy sitting down and looking at the setup....

---oXo---

The Polish attack on the left flank loses its impetus due to the effect of the Swedish infantry's musketry, the Swedish cavalry charge...
The Polish 'german' infantry in the centre has moved up and are exchanging vollies with the Swedish infantry to their front....
On the Polish right flank, the cavalry charge hits the Swedish cavalry....
the cavalry melees are draws on both flanks, the Swedes have held the Polish cavalry charge, can they beat them ?

getting to the critical part of the game now...

Wallhof - Move 2

In the centre, the Polish german infantry advance ...
while the Winged Hussars and Pancerni cavalry on the flanks approach the Swedish cavalry to their front...

The Swedish infantry in the woods and the centre fire on the passing Polish cavalry thinning them out around their flanks and disordering them ....

Wallhof - getting started...

Having decided on not using the chevaux-de-frises and keep the setup basic (got to give the Polish some chance to win.) Time to get the game under way....

---oXo---
As the Swedish commanded shot in the woods on the flanks move into position
The King issues orders to the Foot regiments in the centre ....

Meanwhile in the Polish centre the german foot regiment moves up slightly and the artillery moved to give more target options (if the infantry moves forward..)
The Polish commander discusses the plan of attack with the commander of the right flank cavalry..

... to be continued ...

Wallhof - chevaux-de-frises ?

Still finalising the table setup for the Wallhof game. I've been looking more closely at the engraving of the battle, the Swedes are shown setting up some chevaux-de-frises (or similar) to impede the Polish cavalry ('.....pro arcendo equitatu Poliniae').
I thought it would be useful to include them in the setup. Not having any chevaux-de-frises I made up some basic ones, using spare strip wood and florists wire...
After a simple paint job I tried them out to see how they would look in the game context....
Will finalise the position and lnegth, then should be ready to play the game.

Wallhof - initial table setup ...

Laid out the troops for both sides on the table, Swedish at the back and Polish at the front...

a couple of shots of Swedish side..

a look along the Polish left and right flanks...

I'm still checking through my notes, looking at the numbers on each side. One thing that may be worth adding to the table layout are some field defences (like chevaux de frises) used by the Swedish to discomfort the Polish cavalry which the engraving in the previous post shows

Planning my next game ... the Battle of Wallhof 1626...

I'm currently researching to setup a game scenario based on a battle fought during the Polish-Swedish War of 1626-9. The one I've chosen is the battle of Wallhof in 1626 - described on Wikipedia here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Wallhof.

There are two alternatives for the size of the Polish army. I'm going to opt for something between the two. For troops for each side and their initial positions I'm going to use the nice engraving shown on the Wikipedia page. The following is part of full image with highest resolution, downloaded from here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Slaget_vid_Wallhof_1628_SP230.jpg

By zooming in on the original high res image you can see the nominal units and commanders names. The Polish side will have cossacks (or light cavalry), winged hussars/pancerni, haiduk infantry and German infantry & Reiters - a nice mix.

I'll use my Polish Army and various units from my Pike & Shot collection to represent the Swedish and the German troops fighting with the Polish.
